LASDRI TO COMMENCE TRAINING OF FIRST-LINE DRIVERS
The General Manager of the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI), Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu has revealed that plans are being put in place to commence training of first-line drivers for safety on roads.
Tiamiyu, who disclosed this while featuring as a guest on a Lagos Television Programme, tagged Lagos Today, stated that the Lagos State Government has approved the construction of a world-class driving range for the Drivers Institute to enhance the training administered to first-line drivers.
She explained that first-line drivers are individuals willing to learn the art of driving and are not schooled or exposed at all to driving techniques, who present themselves for learning the skills of driving, a role which was solely reserved for accredited driving schools in Lagos State.
Her words: Presently, we are retraining and recertifying drivers in line with our mandate, but we have noticed that most drivers that present themselves to the Institute for recertification bypass the approved accredited driving school training. In LASDRI, we are trying to bridge the vacuum created by the untrained or unschooled, by retraining the drivers for safety on our roads.
While answering a question on the categories of the drivers that need to be recertified, Tiamiyu said the Institute offers training for all categories of commercial drivers, professional drivers in employment with the public sector and corporate organisations, adding that interested individuals are also free to come forward voluntarily for training.
The LASDRI Boss averred that with the present awareness and acceptance by the private sector, the Lagos State Drivers Institute has gotten to the level where any professional driver that does not possess a valid LASDRI recertification card cannot be employed by corporate organisations, stressing that the Agency's recertification card is now a pre-requisite for employment by all corporate organisations in Lagos State.
The General Manager revealed that the Institute is presently training drivers from the Ministry of Information and Strategy, adding that 17 drivers on the convoy of the Lagos State First Lady were trained extensively by the Institute few days ago.
Tiamiyu maintained that learning is a continuous process and encouraged all drivers to take advantage of the generous opportunity created by Lagos State Government, calling on all professional drivers to visit the Lagos State Drivers Centres and Annexe Offices spread across the State to update their driving skills.
