The Lagos State Drivers' Institute has said that the safety of lives and property of all road users and drivers is a top priority of the Lagos State Government, hence the need for training and retraining of drivers.
The General Manager, LASDRI, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, disclosed this while speaking on a pidgin radio interview programme "Lunch Time Waka" on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM, about the challenges of COVID-19 on LASDRI and its achievements so far.
She said in order to cushion the effects of the challenges being faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Institute has put in place the necessary safety measures outlined by the State government and also opened annexes in two locations, Ojodu Berger and Ikotun-Igando, to accommodate as many trainee drivers as possible in an effort to maintain physical distancing.
Disclosing that the institute has also provided wash hand basins and sanitisers on its premises for the use of all trainee drivers, Tiamiyu stated that no trainee is allowed into the premises without a face mask.
"Despite the lockdown and partial re-opening, we are still working vigorously to make sure that we accommodate a larger number of professional drivers in batches for training sessions at the institute's training centres daily, while upholding the guidelines that have been issued by the State government to flatten the COVID-19 curve", she said.
Tiamiyu further added that the mandate of the institute is not just about issuing of recertification cards but also to produce better drivers, reduce road carnage and havoc on Lagos roads while ensuring the safety of other road users.
In her words, "Training in LASDRI is all about the safety of lives, the safety of property, the safety of drivers and vehicles as well as the safety of all other road users across Lagos State".
While reaffirming that the institute is working vigorously on developing an on-line training for those drivers that are too busy to attend the institute for the yearly mandatory Training Programme and also reduce the number of trainee drivers that are physically present for training at the institute, Tiamiyu advised all drivers that are yet to come for their yearly mandatory training to do so in time to avoid contravening the law.
