LASDRI Holds Annual Train-The-Trainers' Workshop

The Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI), has held its annual Train-The-Trainers - 2020 workshop for Driving School Instructors.

The event themed, "To Facilitate Quality (First-line Drivers) Training Towards Ensuring Safety of Life and Property", was organised in order to keep the instructors abreast of the operational traffic and transportation policies in the State, as well as equip them with new skills and knowledge that will be transferred to first-line trainee drivers.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day workshop held at the Secretariat, Alausa in Ikeja, the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, represented by the Director of Transport Operations in the Ministry, Engr. Gbolahan Toriola, commended LASDRI for organising the event, noting that in order to ensure safer road usage, all trainers need to be trained and retrained.

He said, "If you can get it right with the trainers, then you can get it right with the drivers because the trainers play the role of parents to the drivers in the State. There is a need to change the mindset of road users through training because the world is dynamic and training can change a fixed mindset to a growth mindset".

While welcoming the participants, the General Manager of the Institute, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, reiterated the importance of refresher training for the Driving School Instructors to reduce fatalities and severe injuries inflicted by unschooled drivers on other motorists and road users.

She enjoined all the participants to avail themselves of the opportunity of the workshop provided on a yearly basis by the Institute to update their skills and knowledge for transfer to the first-line drivers towards improving road culture and sanity on Lagos roads.

Speaking in a similar vein, the General Manager of Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Mrs. Lape Kilanko, informed the participants that the Lagos State Government is not relenting in its strides to ensure Lagosians have safer roads.

She, therefore, admonished the Driving School Instructors to prevent further road accidents by ensuring that trainees excel in the test required for certification as drivers.

Also addressing the participants, the Director, Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Engr. Akin-George Fashola, maintained that the act of driving is not just about moving vehicles from one point to another, adding that there are set standards to be met before anyone can qualify as a driver.

He pointed out that so many drivers with numerous years of experience still lack the basic techniques required for safe driving.

The participants were tutored on various topics such as Dynamics and Automobile Fire Prevention/Safety Skills, Vehicle Road Worthiness and Tyre Safety, and Driving Vehicle Dynamics and Energy level Maintenance.
