Lagos State Drivers' Institute has said that it has recognized the need to build the capacity of its staff that interfaces with members of the public in order to continuously achieve safety on Lagos roads.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Oluseyi Whenu who addressed the participants at the in-house training held on Saturday at the premises of the Lagos State Drivers' Institute Oshodi, lkeja Centre, acknowledged the role played by the Institute in maintaining sanity on Lagos roads.

The training exercise which was first of its kind in the Institute arose from the need to bring all members of staff of the Institute in term with the expectations of members of the public, approach training in a professional manner and maintain a cordial relationship with their clients and all other stakeholders in the traffic management chain.

Whenu said "you are part of the key stakeholders that help in ensuring free flow of traffic on our roads. Even though a very few people know this, I must say that what you do is very essential. The basic advice you give to commercial drivers play major roles in reducing accidents on our roads. "

He added that the state government is exploring all avenues to guarantee motorists and all road users an effortless driving experience on roads, adding that the combined efforts of LASDRI, LASTMA, VIS, are all geared towards a gridlock-free Lagos.
The Permanent Secretary commended plans by the Institute to introduce technology into its operations as a way of reaching out to the educated drivers who would be able to take some driving courses online.

Whenu expressed optimism that the training would provide an opportunity for the officials of the Agency to be kept abreast of developments in professional driving especially in the area of road signages and their applications.

The General Manager of the Institute, Mrs Afusat Tiamiyu explained that the Institute was determined to keenly pursue its establishing mandates hence the introduction of the in-house training at the beginning of the year to equip the staff with the requisites skills and information needed.

According to her, the agency was prepared to collaborate with other relevant stakeholders in the management of traffic to key into the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of the present administration in the State, stressing that the mandate of the Agency falls under the 'T' which is 'Traffic Management and Transportation'
The General Manager stated that "With this training, we want everyone to be on the same page that is why we are not limiting the training to instructors alone but also to other members of Staff in the Accounts Department, Administration and Human Resource and other Departments and Units."

She disclosed that LASDRI has identified continuous education of its workforce as one of the strategies that would help reduce the rate of crashes on the roads and bequeath a legacy of sanity to all road users.

Tiamiyu advised the staff of the Institute to always extend courtesies to their clients who are mostly commercial drivers, saying that the drivers deserve the best of courtesies from the government officials.

David Ofem, a Road Safety Consultant, who facilitated a session on Road Signage during the training programme called on LASDRI to ensure synergy in its curriculum by harmonizing subjects offered across all its centres.

"LASDRI should ensure that its approach to training should be in a very structured manner, there should be set out measurable learning outcomes to evaluate the impacts of the training in changing the attitude and orientation of drivers," the Consultant advised.
